Urban Expressions

Statement of Purpose

Urban Expressions exists within the context of Mission Waco to help promote
empowerment among children, youth, and adults through the arts. We hope to help
those entering our program understand themselves as creative beings who have the
power to see and recognize in their worlds overlooked areas of aesthetic interest
and opportunities for inspiration. Our primary goal is to help artists enter a creative
mindset; our secondary goal, to teach them the skills to put their creative thoughts
into artistic action. By first focusing on the mental process of their work, the idea
of “art” becomes more accessible to students and adults who are not as artistically
inclined. Additionally, this shift in focus engages people to look introspectively at
how they are processing information and challenges them to not only to produce an
artistic piece, but also to invest in the artistic process holistically. When we shift our
focus to the process, there is more empowerment and success for participants than
when we focus on the aesthetic value of their products.
